'Fortnite' Skull Trooper Costume Returns With Perks for Original Owners

A compromise that could make everyone happy.

Skull Trooper has returned to Fortnite: Battle Royale, and the Halloween skeleton-themed costume comes with something extra special this time around.

Epic Games reintroduced the Skull Trooper outfit to the game’s store on Tuesday morning just a few weeks before Halloween, but unlike most cosmetic item sets, this one comes with a set of Challenges. Skull Trooper is available in the Item Shop to anyone for 1,500 V-Bucks (roughly $15), but there’s a little bit of extra something for players that already have it. They can select a purple glow for the skin instead of the standard white or light neon green. It’s practically nothing, but having the purple glow means a lot in terms of Fortnite street cred.

Regardless of when the player comes into ownership of Skull Trooper, they’ll get access to challenges exclusive to the outfit, similar to Tomatohead. Doing all five gets the player access to a Ghost Portal back bling that’s an eerie blue color.

The challenges are actually quite difficult:

  • Complete 7 Daily Challenges (7)
  • Play matches (50)
  • Play matches with at least one elimination (14)
  • Search 10 chests in a single match (10)
  • Deal damage to opponents in a single match (1,000)

Several of these Challenges are kind of the “set it and forget it” type. Playing 50 total matches sounds like a lot, but players have until the end of time to achieve this so there’s no need to rush. Completing Daily Challenges accidentally happens all the time. For the most part, these are just very time-consuming. Opening 10 chests is by far the most difficult, with dealing 1,000 damage the next-hardest.

According to the countdown on the in-game store, Skull Trooper should be leaving the Item Shop at 8 p.m. Eastern, so there’s only so much time left to claim the outfit.
