This 'Cyberpunk 2077' "Pizza Guy" Easter Egg is Totally Delicious

Would you kill for pizza? Because he would.

When players eventually visit Night City — after Cyberpunk 2077 is released, of course — they’ll have to contend with all sorts of cybernetic threats in far-flung future California. One of the threats players just might face could be the neighborhood pizza guy.

Two screenshots from Cyberpunk 2077’s 48-minute gameplay demo that was released this week piece together the half-serious, wholly entertaining Pizza Guy Theory: First there’s the seemingly innocuous shot from the gameplay demo released earlier in the week. We’re led to believe that the guy who runs the “Buck-A-Slice” pizza shop in Night City is totally willing to shoot you in the face.

“This pizza guy in the gameplay demo seems to turn against you in a quest,” reads a reddit post on theory. “Don’t trust the pizza guy.”

The second image is taken from the official Cyberpunk.net website and is labeled as a “Screenshot,” while the first image (“Buck a Slice”) is taken directly out of the gameplay demo.

The two characters models wear the same exact turquoise jacket with a pink stripe across the front. The pizza guy is packing a gun, and he’s not afraid to use it. Or maybe not.

Why the Pizza Guy Theory Probably Isn’t True

It’s definitely an impressive feat of perception, but it seems unlikely that the actual pizza guy from the game specifically turns on the player during some kind of quest — although that would be great. The game’s developer, CD Projekt Red, may recycle many of the same character models for these promotional images and the gameplay demos. Because the top picture comes from an unfinished version of the game and the bottom comes what’s basically just a promotional image, neither one is a particularly good indicator of what actually happens in the game’s finished story.

But let’s humor the theory — it’s fun! The Reddit post spotting it omits a telling detail that happens a few moments before that screen capture. The Pizza Guy, labeled a “STREET VENDOR” by the game’s UI, says over the phone, “Oh, no, no, no. Fourteen is no good, it’s just not enough.”

Clearly, the pizza guy is selling something other than Buck-A-Slice pizza.

Does he want a certain number of something? Or is he selling something that costs 14 bucks? Does he cut the pizza slices very thin and he’s bartering the cost of an entire pizza pie?

The currency in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 is “Eddies,” short for “European Dollars” (a global future currency that averages all the major world currencies). If people can still get a slice of pizza for only a “buck” in 2077, then it’s possible that this guy is a drug dealer selling some kind of drugs that someone’s trying to pay 14 bucks for. The gameplay demo makes a point of explaining that just about everyone in this seedy part of the city is the unsavory type.

But is this pizza guy willing to shoot someone in the face to get what he wants?

We’ve got a long wait before we know for sure, but for the time being, let’s all be appropriately suspicious of the pizza guy.

Cyberpunk 2077 has no currently confirmed release date.
