'Infinity War' Dialogue Hints at Pepper Potts Suiting Up in 'Avengers 4'

Of all things, the subtitles for Avengers: Infinity War might be hiding a huge clue about what happens in the aftermath of Thanos wiping out half the universe — and it might even hint that none other than Pepper Potts will suit up in her own Iron Man armor for Avengers 4.

Since the release of Infinity War on digital and Blu-ray earlier this month, some fans who prefer watching with subtitles on have noticed a peculiar grammar construction on Gwyneth Paltrow’s last line of dialogue in the movie. And on Wednesday, Yahoo! Entertainment noted a huge difference from what we all initially heard.

After the fight against Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian in New York City, Iron Man boards their alien spacecraft headed for Titan to rescue Doctor Strange. Pepper Potts calls him. “Tell me you’re not on that ship,” she says, telling him repeatedly to “Come back.” Their conversation is cut off just as she says, “I’m going to—.”

She’s going to do what?

Except the official closed captioning writes it as, “I’m going too.”

Does Pepper Potts actually think she's "going too" when Tony leaves Earth in 'Infinity War'?

Upon rewatching and listening to the scene, it does actually sound as if Pepper Potts says “too” instead of “to,” which would mean that she’s not “going to” do anything other than try to join Tony on this journey. Considering that ship has already left Earth’s atmosphere by this point, she obviously doesn’t tag along for the ride to Titan, but it definitely sounds like Pepper Potts might at least try to follow that ship.

Could that mean Pepper Potts will suit up in some kind of Iron Man armor in Avengers 4 or even that maybe she already has?

Recall that in Iron Man 3, Stark encased her in a suit of armor to protect her from an explosion. Back in December 2017, Paltrow also shared a video over social media that revealed her in a motion capture suit while on the set of Infinity War/Avengers 4. And in Marvel Comics, Potts does suit up as the hero Rescue after Tony Stark makes her custom armor, so there’s a precedent for all of this happening.

Shortly after Infinity War’s release, in an interview with Paltrow published in the official Avengers: Infinity War magazine, she claims that Potts and Stark “have a child.” They do talk briefly in Infinity War about having kids, but she claims to not be pregnant … yet.

Given the rumored time jump between Infinity War and Avengers 4, maybe they do have a child in the next movie? And maybe both Stark and Potts suit up as superhero partners in addition to being a married couple?

There’s no telling how this might play out in the next Avengers movie. For all we know, maybe the closed captioning was simply a mistake on the part of the person who wrote them. Mistakes do happen, but maybe the mistake here was letting slip this little tease that something more complicated was going on?

Avengers 4 will be released in theaters on May 3, 2019.
