'The Flash' Season 5 Costume Photo Reveals What Barry Wears in the Future

After a low-quality photo of the new Flash suit for Season 5 leaked online last week, The Flash star Grant Gustin shared the first official photo of his new costume over the weekend. Despite tons of initial concerns, the costume actually looks pretty great. It’s perhaps the most comics-accurate suit we’ve seen on the show, and that’s mostly because the suit finally omits the chin strap.

Gustin shared the photo via Instagram on Saturday. For the most part the new costume looks remarkably similar to previous iterations. The suit was first teased in the Season 5 trailer released during San Diego Comic-Con. In the trailer, Barry’s daughter from the future gives him the Flash ring that compresses an entire suit inside it. Previous Flash suits designed by Cisco Ramon were made of fire resistant “reinforced tripolymer,” but this new suit is totally different.

Here’s a closer look at the new costume:

The new look does certainly look more intimidating than previous versions of the suit. The part covering Barry’s head looks more like a helmet and less like a cowl mask, and the overall color seems much brighter than previous shades that were close to maroon.

In the comics at least, the Flash chemically treats his suit to shrink and fit inside a tiny chamber in his ring. Presumably, The Flash will explain a similar pseudoscientific method for achieving the same result in Season 5. After all, his daughter Nora West-Allen did bring it back from circa 2050, so who knows what kind of technology is available then?

Gustin also shared the following “bonus sneak peak” via Instagram:

The Flash getting a new suit for the start of the season has basically become an annual tradition at this point, but Season 5’s suit will mark the greatest departure from previous iterations. In the Season 4 finale, Barry pretty much ruined his current Flash suit punching a satellite out of the sky, so Nora giving him a new one couldn’t have been timed any better.

What else might Nora bring back from the future to help Team Flash out? We’ll find out when Season 5 kicks off in a couple months.

The Flash Season 5 will premiere on The CW Tuesday, October 9 at 8 a.m. Eastern.
