'Nightflyers' Trailer Looks Like 'Interstellar' Meets 'Cloverfield Paradox'

And so far it looks enthralling.

A brand-new trailer for Nightflyers debuted at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and the sci-fi thriller from Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin is starting to look a lot like Interstellar meets The Cloverfield Paradox. Whether or not that mashup of horror sci-fi with cerebral sci-fi will thrive remains to be seen, but so far things are looking pretty darn compelling.

Syfy debuted the trailer during a Nightflyers panel on Thursday night, and it’s the first official trailer following some earlier teasers from May and June. The trailer opens on a father saying goodbye to his daughter before leaving on a desperate — and lengthy — mission to outer space, which looks and feels a lot like what happened in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar. But very quickly things take a jarring psychological dive towards surrealistic horror and violence, hence the Cloverfield Paradox vibes.

This team of scientists ventures aboard the Nightflyer spaceship to journey far away so they can save their dying Earth, but somebody is sabotaging their ship’s systems. There’s also either something supernatural going on or people are hallucinating hardcore, because it gets really trippy. Either way, it looks frightening AF in both the trailer and this behind-the-scenes look also released at SDCC:

Nightflyers is based on a 1980 novella written by Martin, who has previously described this upcoming TV adaptation as Psycho in space” and a “haunted house story on a starship.” The original story — and several of its previous adaptations — involves the crew trying to contact alien life that’s discovered on the edges of the solar system. But so far there doesn’t seem to be much in terms of aliens.

One thing’s for sure: No matter what’s going on aboard the Nightflyer, anybody who watches the Nightflyers show is bound to get some pretty terrifying sci-fi horror.

Nightflyers debuts sometime this fall.
