'Smash Bros. Ultimate' New Characters: Dragon Ball Easter Egg Sparks Rumors

Is Goku coming to Smash Bros?

The new and improved Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already has the biggest roster in the video game series’ history, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope for a few extra fighters. Now, an Easter egg hidden in one of the game’s returning characters suggests that Nintendo could be planning a pretty huge surprise: a partnership with Dragon Ball Z. Here’s what you need to know.

It all starts with Wolf, the antagonist from the Star Fox series who appeared in Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii but didn’t return in the Wii U version of the game. Now that he’s back, players have noticed something interesting about the redesigned Wolf. He appears to take a stance in the game that looks shockingly similar to a certain Dragon Ball character, Yamcha.

Comic Book points out that Yamcha’s pose, aptly named Wolf Fang Fist, actually comes from a specific form of Kung Fu. So it’s possible that’s what Nintendo based Wolf’s new design off of. However, it’s also possible (if unlikely) that Nintendo could be paving the way for a Yamcha character in Smash with a similar moveset to Wolf’s (like how Ganondorf is basically just a bigger and slower version of Captain Falcon).

That might sound like totally wild speculation, but it’s not that farfetched. Funimation, the company behind Dragon Ball Z, has made it pretty clear that they want one of their characters in a Super Smash Bros. game. The company even tweeted out a mockup of what it might look like if Goku joined the fight.

More recently, one Dragon Ball illustrator took to Twitter to show off what a crossover might actually look like… and it looks awesome. The first of two images teases Link squaring off with Frieza, with a Frieza-powered version of Kirby hanging out in the corner. The second drawing imagines Vegeta taking down Wario with a brutal air attack.

Of course, it seems unlikely that we’ll get more that one Dragon Ball Z character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but even one crossover fighter would be awesome. Nintendo still hasn’t confirmed any plans to add to the current roster, but rumor has it we could be getting a handful of extra fighters. So who knows?
