Spice Girls Superhero Reboot Might Be Better Than 'Justice League'

Columbia Pictures

On Friday, news broke that the Spice Girls are coming together for a new animated superhero movie. The five women are potentially reuniting to save the day, forming a team that would rival the Justice League. With a heavy serving of nostalgia, the British pop group is moving into the world of superhero films after leaving a massive music legacy.

All five members of the beloved pop group will have their likenesses used for a film that will have a strong girl-power message, according to Variety. Each hero will have a “girl power” based on each member’s personality, which will be voiced by the group’s members. Fans of the group will remember that the Spice Girls were made up of Scary Spice, Baby Spice, Posh Spice, Sporty Spice, and Ginger Spice.

Anticipation for new projects from the group has been building since discussions of some sort of reunion began circulating last month. There have been unsubstantiated rumors of reunion tours and other developing projects, but this animated feature would be the first official new project from them, assuming it finds a production partner.

After forming in 1994, the Spice Girls quickly became a worldwide sensation. They are considered one of the best girl groups of all time and opened the door for many of the pop artists that followed. This would not be the first film they have made together: the girls came together for 1997’s Spice World, a movie where the group played themselves and centers on a series of fictional events leading up to a major concert.

The project is currently being shopped to production partners, but a source said to Variety that “The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They’re the most successful girl group on the planet. It’s just what Marvel or Disney needs.”

Justice League had nostalgia on its side, too, when it hit theaters, but things certainly didn’t go to plan. Maybe the Spice Girls will have better luck on their journey to the big screen.
