'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 2: Writer Clarifies Enterprise Canon

Just exactly what the USS Enterprise will be doing in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery is still anyone’s guess. Hopefully, it will do more than just continue to hover next to the USS Discovery, but one of the show’s producers wants fans to remember that the show isn’t about this spaceship at all.

“The show is called ‘Discovery.’ It’s not ‘Enterprise.’” Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman told Variety on Sunday, echoing what showrunner Aaron Harberts told Inverse on Sunday.

Instead of “overshadowing” the Discovery, Kurtzman said that “the promise of the Enterprise holds the answers to a lot of those questions, including Spock’s relationship with his half-sister who he’s never mentioned. Which does not necessarily mean you’re going to see Spock, just that we owe an answer to that question.”

Kurtzman is used to juggling complicated questions about Star Trek, and Spock and the Enterprise in specific. In 2009, along with Roberto Orci, Kurtzman wrote the screenplay for the first J.J. Abrams-directed reboot film, simply titled Star Trek. While that film — and two subsequent sequels — take place in an alternate dimension than the rest of Trek, Discovery is supposed to be in the same canon as all the other TV series, including the classic show from the Sixties. Which brings up an interesting question as to who should play Spock and Pike, should they appear in Season 2.

Based on Kurtzman’s comments, and what Aaron Harberts told Inverse on Sunday, it seems like the show is leaning more toward showing Captain Pike than actually visiting the Enterprise. With the obvious exception of the USS Shenzhou and the ISS Charon, the latest Trek has been fairly minimalist about showing the interiors of other spaceships. So, it’s possible that Captain Pike simply beams over to the USS Discovery, alone for some reason, and we never actually see Spock in Season 2.

Either way, the biggest question still hasn’t been answered: What will Spock and Pike be wearing?
