Original Enterprise Jumps Into 'Star Trek: Discovery' in Perfect Fan Video

Dan Costa

Somewhere out in the galaxy of Star Trek: Discovery, the original Enterprise from the classic Sixties series is flying around. We’ll probably never see the NCC-1701 USS Enterprise on Discovery, even though it’s been mentioned on the show already. But how would the special effects from the original series match-up with what the starships look like on the most recent version of Trek?

On Wednesday, Dan Costa posted his fan-made video of what the Constitution-Class Enterprise from the original Star Trek might look like if it popped up in Discovery. It’s a convincing rendering, too, and will make hardcore fans believe that new series could get away with showing us this very retro design in the slicker, more contemporary aesthetic of Discovery. When Inverse spoke to Trek expert Larry Nemecek before the debut of Discovery back in September 2017, he said that the key to bringing back the Sixties Trek designs was to “shoot them differently, more creatively.” And this fan video from Costa proves him right.

The season finale for Star Trek: Discovery’s first season is around the corner, airing on Sunday, February 11. There’s no reason to believe a Constitution-class ship like the old Enterprise would show up in the finale, but you never know. In the mid-season debut, “Despite Yourself,” Discovery brought back a reference to the sister ship of the Enterprise, the USS Defiant, and even showed a schematic of what the ship looked like after it got commandeered by the Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe.

The original Enterprise is also a lot bigger than either the USS Discovery or the USS Shenzhou. The Discovery only has a crew of about 130. In the original, Star Trek, the Enterprise had a crew of over 400. In the episode “A Piece of the Action,” Kirk told a space mobster, “there were over 400 guys up there!”

Hopefully, Discovery will show us the hugeness of the Enterprise next to the tininess of the show’s titular ship sometime in the future. But for now, we’ve got this great fan video.

The season finale of Star Trek: Discovery airs on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on CBS All Access.
