'Infinity War' Photos and Footage: What We Learned

Vanity Fair

As if Thanksgiving wasn’t already packed with delicious goods, new pictures from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War have been released, along with footage that probably wasn’t meant to be. Here’s everything new we learned about the massive fight coming up between the Marvel Universe and Thanos.

Avengers Healed?

On Monday morning, Vanity Fair unleashed covers that mix and match various heroes from the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man hangs out with Doctor Strange, Falcon and Thor chill with Iron Man and Black Widow, and petty thief Ant-Man stands beside the royal Wakandan king, Black Panther.

But perhaps the most interesting characters on the cover are Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), as they’re seen in prime form as opposed to the more worn and torn versions we last saw them. In the Comic-Con footage of Infinity War, Captain America had a full beard, while Thor had his eye cut out by Hela in Thor: Ragnarok.

While Evans and Hemsworth are probably looking their best for the Vanity Fair covers, does this mean they’ll be healed or restored in Infinity War too?

The Wasp May Join the Fray

While Evangeline Lily’s participation in Infinity War as the Wasp remains in doubt (she’s not even on the film’s IMDB page), Lily does appear in full costume throughout the Vanity Fair spread. While the Vanity Fair story encompasses Marvel’s immediate future, which includes Ant-Man and the Wasp next summer, it is interesting that the Wasp is seen suited up alongside all the other Marvel heroes.

The Collector Returns

In the new footage that leaked over the weekend, one extended sequence feature all the returning Guardians of the Galaxy (including Mantis) sneaking into the Collector’s vault. At the same time, the Collector is there (reprised by del Toro), and he’s being tortured by Thanos (Josh Brolin). It’s a pretty scary moment in the movie that still allows the Guardians to make the audience laugh.

Tessa Thompson as "Valykrie" in 'Thor: Ragnarok.'

Valkyrie Returns

Tessa Thompson stole the show in Thor: Ragnarok as the hard-drinking Valkyrie, but it was unknown whether or not Thompson would have that opportunity again for Infinity War. While the new film has yet to definitively confirm Valkyrie’s return, like Evangeline Lily/Wasp, Tessa appears in full Valkyrie gear alongside Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, and even Cobie Smulders, the former sitcom star who plays Agent Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Shuri (Letita Wright) in 'Black Panther.'

Shuri Joins the Fight

Like the previous possible candidates for Infinity War, Letita Wright’s Shuri may only be in the Vanity Fair spread to hype Black Panther, but it is interesting that she’s seen in costume with other MCU figures, notably Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Nebula (Karen Gillan).

A Bunch of Heroes May Die in Avengers 4

Deep into the Vanity Fair story, Kevin Feige says that Avengers 4 — final title TBD — will “bring things you’ve never seen in superhero films: a finale.” While Marvel Studios isn’t stopping its dominance any time soon, as Feige said there’s at least another 20 movies in store, Avengers 4 will make way for a new generation. Unfortunately, that could mean a lot of dead superheroes when all is said and done.

Said Feige: “There will be two distinct periods. Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.”

Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War will be released on May 4, 2018.
