'Pokémon Ultra Sun' and 'Moon' Introduce an Insane Supervillain Team-Up

"Team Rainbow Rocket" is the new overpowered enemy squad.

The Pokémon Company

When Pokémon trainers return to Alola in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they’ll have to contend with the most insane villain team-up in Pokémon gaming history. Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket and a Gym Leader from the original Pokémon Red and Blue, unites every team of villains from past games into “Team Rainbow Rocket.”

That’s right, Pokémon is getting its own supervillain team-up, and each leader brings with them an army of generic Pokémon Trainer thugs with “bad” Pokémon like Ekans, Muk, and probably too many Meowths to count. (Team Rocket’s leading this team-up after all).

Ghetsis of Team Plasma and Lysandre of Team Flare get specific mentions, but it looks like Archie of Team Aqua, Maxie of Team Magma, and Cyrus of Team Galactic also join in, with other villainous characters factoring in as well. The purpose of this crazy team-up, and why Giovanni migrated to the Alola Region, remains to be seen.

There’s one big reason for trainers to be afraid: Giovanni has himself a Mewtwo this time around.

Check out the reveal video below, which introduces Team Rainbow Rocket and a ton of other new features for Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon:

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon “Ultra Wormholes” begin popping up all around Alola, leading to “countless warp holes that lead to different worlds.”

Somewhere inside is the Ultra Megalopolis, a world wrapped in darkness that had its light stolen by Necrozma. In it, a tower of light still shines. Could that be the new end-game challenge for Pokémon players this time around? Are the wormholes and that tower what brought Giovanni to Alola to unite all the villains in search of some new power?

We’ll have to wait for the new game to find out.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon come to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems on November 17, 2017
