'Star Wars' Fans Ask: Do We Need Another 'Last Jedi' Trailer?

Lucasfilm

Fans of a galaxy far, far away have been eagerly awaiting a full-length trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But do we really need one?

What Happened

Journalists and Star Wars nerds Ryan Parker and Graeme McMillan over at The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision asked the surprisingly reasonable question in an article published Friday.

Do we really need a full-length Last Jedi trailer? It’s not like people need to be reminded that a new Star Wars movie is coming out; theories run rampant across the internet every day and even the most casual of fans are aware of the premiere date.

As Parker says: “I am so hyped for the film and so happy I know next to nothing about it thanks to that first trailer, I would like to experience the movie just like this.”

What it Means

As Parker and McMillan point out, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story both had two trailers to their names by this point leading up to their releases. Star Wars hype is more prominent than ever before.

But despite Parker and McMillan being totally right — we really don’t need another trailer, from both a marketing perspective on Lucasfilm’s part and an oversaturation perspective for fans — we’ll probably get another trailer soon.

What’s Next

Force Awakens premiered in theaters in December 2015 and got its first, full-length trailer in October 2015 after two teasers had already premiered in November 2014 and April 2015. Since Last Jedi is premiering in December, it would stand to reason that its trailer might arrive sometime within the next month.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15.
