Why Barry and Iris's Wedding in 'The Flash' Is Doomed

The CW

Last season on The Flash, Barry Allen did the first selfless thing he’s ever done when he gave himself up to the Speed Force. Barry’s sacrifice included his engagement to Iris West, but there would be no show if there were no Fastest Man Alive. In a teaser for next season, showrunner Andrew Kreisberg says Barry and Iris will finally get married, but they’re not going to be without problems.

When asked by Entertainment Weekly if Barry and Iris will get married, Kreisberg replied with good news and bad news. “Good news: Yes,” he said. “Bad news: ‘They are finally going to get married this season and then it’s going to be: Can they stay married with everything that’s coming up against them?’”

Maybe they can, Andrew Kreisberg! No marriage is perfect, and certainly being married to a superhero has its own unique challenges. But as they were/are in the comics, Barry Allen and Iris West are fated to be with each other on The Flash, something Iris West actress Candice Patton has previously expressed.

“I think it’s a nice nod to the idea that maybe it’s destiny for Earth-1 Barry and Iris,” Patton told Nerdist last season when the show revealed the characters’ Earth-2 doubles for the first time. “It gets their wheels turning about what that means for the future. It’s fair to say that there is gentle proof that they could end up together.”

So Iris and Barry will finally end up together on The Flash. But I speak for a lot of Flash fans when I say: Let’s at least see Patty Spivot one more time.

The Flash will return to the CW Tuesday, October 10 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
