The Next Arrowverse Crossover Will Be More Emotional

Last November, an armada of aliens called the Dominators invaded all four of The CW’s superhero shows: Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The TV superheroes successfully fended off the “Invasion!” threat and saved the world, but the producers of all four shows are cooking up an even bigger — and more emotional — scenario for next season.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Marc Guggenheim admitted that this year’s four-way crossover will be difficult because outdoing an alien invasion is a pretty tall order. But darn it, they’re going to try. “If we end up doing what we’re talking about doing, it’s going to be pretty cool,” Guggenheim says. “The crossover is always the most challenging thing we do, but it’s also the most fun. Every year we feel the pressure … I feel like each crossover has topped the previous one. Topping last year’s, that’s a high bar, if for no other reason than what do you do that’s bigger than aliens?”

Guggenheim then added: We’ve got some very, very exciting ideas.”

The executive producer then said that showrunner and producer Greg Berlanti gave a helpful lesson “very early on” in the making of the “Invasion!” crossover. “[I]f you can’t increase the bombast, increase the emotional stakes and the emotional payoffs, so that’s a very oblique comment on where our heads are at for this season,” Guggenheim said.

The Arrowverse will return this October, when Supergirl Season 3 premieres on October 9 at 8 p.m. Eastern. All four episodes of last year’s “Invasion!” crossover are available to stream on Netflix.
