Celebrities, they’re just like us.
On Monday, Elon Musk posted what for anyone else would have been a totally banal photo of a DMV office, along with the caption: “Was just at the DMV & dude had the actual sloth from Zootopia on his desk.”
What followed was Instagram followers having a field day imagining the CEO of Tesla strolling into a DMV and taking a number like a regular joe. But bizarreness aside, what would a billionaire who runs a company at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology be registering at the DMV?
All self-driving cars have to be registered with the California DMV before they can be tested on public roads. There’s also a fee that needs to be payed yearly to renew the testing permit. It could be that Musk was seeing to the permit for another iteration of the much-anticipated Tesla Model 3.

Still, it’s kind of weird that Musk would go himself. The answer could actually be a lot more simple — the billionaire’s birthday is June 28. He could have just been renewing his license.
For the uninitiated, Musk doesn’t post a lot on Instagram, but when he does it’s actually pretty good.
It's good to hold onto a sense of humor when you're trying to send humans to Mars.
