Why the Han Solo Movie Might Have to Go to Tatooine

Lucasfilm

Han Solo’s upcoming standalone adventure could bring us back to Tatooine, even if only to explain why he has such deep ties to Jabba the Hutt and owes him so much money.

Jabba used Tatooine as his main base of operations for a long, long time in that galaxy far, far away, at least from as early as the Clone Wars all the way up to his untimely death at the hands of Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi. Fans will remember that Han’s first appearance in A New Hope was in the Mos Eisley cantina when Greedo was harassing him about debts owed to Jabba.

The subsequent films provide further details about Han’s complicated history with Jabba, mainly as an illegal smuggler who ditched his stolen goods to avoid trouble with the Empire. It was enough debt to warrant Jabba’s employment of Boba Fett to eventually freeze and capture Han in The Empire Strikes Back.

Particularly in light of recent photos captured from the set of the Han Solo film, it looks like parts of the movie will take place on some kind of desert planet, though keep in mind, there are supposedly well over a hundred of them.

It’s already been revealed that the plot of the Han Solo spin-off will feature the young smuggler between the ages of 18 and 24. And it’s canon that Han is 29 years old at the time of A New Hope, so unless he met and worked for Jabba exclusively in the missing five years between the films, it stands to reason we’ll see the big slug, and maybe even his palace on Tatooine.

The untitled Han Solo spin-off film will be released May 25, 2018.
