This Chill Dog Is the Best in the ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Trailer

The first full trailer for Blade Runner 2049 is upon us, and with it comes a new inspiring hero to root for: the calm, incredibly chill dog that trots away from crumbling walls and explosions like they’re nothing to fuss about. Yes, in 2049, the good dogs are that good — and that just might be the film’s biggest mystery.

The dog is the close companion of Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who’s holed up in the middle of some abandoned building in the ruins of a sandy city. The trailer is more focused on Agent K (Ryan Gosling) being “special” and tracking Deckard down, saying, “I want to ask you some questions.” When Deckard pulls a gun on K, you can see the same dog in the doorway in the background. Predictably, Agent K totally blows up Deckard’s spot by giving away his hiding place to the bad guys. Just like that, Deckard and K run fearfully from explosions and the building itself crumbling, but Deckard’s super-chill dog just trots along like it’s nothing out of the ordinary:

To his credit, Deckard is probably out of shape after being in hiding for 30 years, especially considering how dusty his neighborhood is. That being said, this calm dog is able to keep up with Deckard’s faux-run with ease. But how is he able to stay so calm? What’s his story? Is this dog a replicant? Does he know that the mention of “boiled dog entrees” is part of the Voight-Kampff test?

Let’s just hope that there’s enough room in the rest of Agent K’s “story” for him to write in a happy ending for this dog.

Check out the full trailer here, with the dog’s big scene beginning around the 1:39 mark:

Blade Runner 2049 is out in wide release on October 6, 2017 with at least one dog in it.
