New 'Game of Thrones' Theory is a Dark Twist for Jon Snow

by Lauren Sarner

Azor Ahai, the legendary hero who will supposedly be reborn to save the world in Game of Thrones, is probably Jon Snow. That being said, like everything in this story, Jon saving the world from darkness might come at a very dark cost. A new theory posits that in order for Jon to be Azor Ahai reborn, he must kill Daenerys.

In the first crop of Season 7 photos, Sam and Gilly are reading about Azor Ahai, which indicates that the prophecy of his rebirth will play a role in the final two seasons.

According to legend, Azor Ahai lived thousands of years before the events of the story and saved the world from darkness once before. He did so at a great cost — in order to forge his legendary sword Lightbringer, he had to stab his beloved wife Nissa Nissa. In doing so, her soul infused the blade, enabling Lightbringer to exist. Therefore, as one fan suggests, if Jon is Azor Ahai, then Daenerys is his Nissa Nissa. This gets particularly dark if the rumors and set reports are true that — spoiler alert — Jon and Daenerys will hook up in Season 7.

On the other hand, it would be just like Game of Thrones to make Jon a king and a hero, only to have him horribly kill the woman he loves in the process. And it would be entirely in line with the story to elevate Daenerys as the triumphant ruler of Westeros — and have her taken down not by a foe like Cersei but by someone with good intentions.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres on July 16, 2017.
