Why 'Rebels' Season 4 Will Probably Reference 'Rogue One'

Disney

Hera’s crew aboard the Ghost could have a run-in with Cassian Andor of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the near future. Star Wars Rebels is getting a Season 4, which prompts questions about just how much more intersection will happen between the Rebels crew and more widely beloved Star Wars characters.

On March 3, Deadline reported that Star Wars Rebels has been renewed by Disney XD for what is, to some, a surprising fourth season. Many fans had assumed the hit animated series would come to an end with Season 3 as Sabine and Ezra wielded their respective sabers and barreled headfirst — a little abruptly — into original trilogy territory, maybe showing the fall of Luke Skywalker’s new Jedi Order. But the continuation of the series into Season 4 could mean some serious crossover between Rebels and Rogue One, and it may possibly even include some of the specific events from the original trilogy.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story gave a nice nod to Rebels by referencing Hera Syndulla over the Yavin base’s intercom. Rebellion leader Mon Mothma, extremist Saw Gerrera, Gold Leader, and pilot Wedge Antilles have all shown up in animated form on Rebels. Maul has been a persistent threat throughout the series. And an older Obi-Wan Kenobi will be making an appearance by the end of the season.

The series runners clearly know that referencing Star Wars films and dodging in and out of the proffered plot is a recipe for success. So, the continuation of the series could mean even more familiar faces popping up on Rebels.

“The team behind Star Wars Rebels delivers epic storytelling that has captivated fans of all ages across the globe,” Marc Buhaj, senior vice president of programming and general manager at Disney XD, said, “We’re excited to continue sharing the journey of these fan-favorite Rebels with our audience in the fall.”

Synopsis have yet to be revealed for any episodes of Season 4, so the exact nature of the season is up in the air. One thing’s for certain: The crew of the Ghost will continue to be some of the best and brightest rebels in the Star Wars galaxy.
