Gabe Newell is Working on Something New in 'Half-Life' Universe

The Valve co-founder didn't have much to say about 'Half-Life 3' though.

Gabe Newell, the co-founder and president of Valve, broke with the video game company’s tendency to be tight-lipped about pretty much everything when he logged onto Reddit for an AMA on Tuesday. Newell was, of course, asked about the status of the highly anticipated and possibly mythical Half-Life 3. He didn’t have much to say on that issue, but he did say that a new IP was in the works set in the same universe that Half-Life and Portal share.

“What is the status of Half-Life 3/Half-Life 2 Episode 3?” Redditor Baldemoto asked. “Is Valve still working on any fully-fledged single player games? An unidentified anonymous source at Valve has said that Half-Life 3 has been canceled. Is that source legitimate?”

“The number 3 must not be said,” Newell responded, before making what we assume is a joke. “Yes. I personally believe all unidentified anonymous sources on the Internet.”

While Newell could neither confirm nor deny anything about Half-Life 3, a game that fans have been anxiously awaiting for a decade, he did give a concrete answer to another question.

“Any chance of a new IP that takes place in the Half-Life/Portal* universe?” Japasthebass asked. I feel like there’s a lot of story left to be explored there.”

“Yep,” Newell said. It’s not much to go on, since technically all he confirmed was a “chance,” but it’s a major tease either way.

Elsewhere in the AMA, Newell said that his personal favorite Valve game was Portal 2, but the multiplayer game he played the most was Dota 2.
