Possible 'Rocket and Groot' Spin-Off Could Use the Comics

Marvel Comics, David Lopez

Vin Diesel feels pretty strongly that Guardians of the Galaxy that if the planets align correctly, there will be an eventual Rocket Racoon and Groot spin-off movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s according to an interview with Screen Junkies over at CCXP in Brazil.

“I think if it’s up to James Gunn, you are going to see a Groot and Rocket movie after Infinity War. I think that’s highly possible. We shall see[,]” he teased.

If that’s true, however, the most recent run of Rocket Racoon and Groot comic books would be a great place to start, especially since they feel directly influenced by Gunn’s film and writing. In addition, if Diesel’s assertion is correct that the film could happen after Marvel’s Infinity Wars, then the timeline of the comics would match up, since the books take place after the equally huge “Secret Wars” event.

The first couple issues written by Scottie Young and illustrated by Filipe Andrade, already feel like the perfect spin-off of Guardians of the Galaxy. But of course, the people want their favorite heroes on the big screen, and the book also lends itself to big setpieces.

Based on the simple popularity of Baby Groot, a spin-off film featuring the outlaw duo would probably do very well. Unfortunately, the comics do best when they focus on standalone adventure episodes in the lives of Rocket and Groot, and it’s hard to imagine a film adaptation that will be content to just pursue the non-essential adventures of the two characters, when each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe contributes to a greater tapestry. The closest film of that mold is Ant-Man, and even that film paved the way for Doctor Strange and Captain America: Civil War.
