Sadly, Wonder Woman Isn't Queer in the DC Cinematic Universe

Wonder Woman might be canonically queer, but don’t expect her to get a girlfriend in the upcoming DC film.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot chatted with Variety about her upcoming solo flick, and confirmed that Wonder Woman’s bisexuality will not be covered in the film. She does have a male love interest, played by Chris Pine, but she won’t have any romantic or sexual relationships with other women.

“It’s not something we’ve explored,” Gadot said. “In this movie she does not experience any bisexual relationships. But it’s not about that. She’s a woman who loves people for who they are. She can be bisexual. She loves people for their hearts.”

Wonder Woman writers Greg Rucka and Gail Simone have confirmed that Wonder Woman is queer in the comics and beyond, leading some to question whether that could come into play in the DC Cinematic Universe. While Gadot said Wonder Woman won’t feature her character in any relationships with other women, she did agree that it “makes sense” that Wonder Woman would be queer, given her years on Themyscira.

Wonder Woman comes out June 2, 2017, followed by her co-starring role in Justice League, which is currently in development and slated for release the following November.
