Imagine a roller derby battle royale that’s like Tony Hawk with guns.

If you already thought roller derbys were dangerous, just wait. The developers of the critically acclaimed skateboarding game OlliOlli World are focusing on a new sport on wheels: rollerskating with guns. Rollerdrome, a game that revolves around a fictional blood sport of the same name, is Roll7’s latest action game set in a dystopian 2030. Shoot for the top while investigating a sinister corporate secret in this retrofuture adventure — or just climb the leaderboards for fun. Here’s everything we know so far about Rollerdrome.

What is the Rollerdrome release date?

Rollerdrome will release for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC (via Steam) on August 16, 2022.

Just another day in the ring.

It was one of the newly announced games in this summer’s PlayStation State of Play. Fans won’t need to wait long, since the release date comes only two months after the reveal.

Is there a Rollerdrome trailer?

Yes! Rollerdrome’s first trailer premiered at the PlayStation State of Play on June 2. It starts with a voiceover of the premise, as if it’s a sci-fi movie instead of a rollerskating with guns game.

In the year 2030, a new blood sport grips the globe. And in the arena, there will only be the victorious ... and the dead.

Cue your skater rolling into the ring, double pistols blazing. You shoot down one opponent, flip into the air to grab a power-up, then fire at the next one. The “retrofuture” backdrop stands out with its fine lines and bright, simple colors that look straight out of an ‘80s newspaper cartoon. It’s a tight presentation that shows off the gameplay and what to expect from Rollerdrome’s world.

What is Rollerdrome gameplay like?

Smoke bombs and skating.

Rollerdrome is a single-player, third-person shooter that basically boils down to an action game. You shoot, you dodge roll, and you skate. Gun down your opponents and evade their attacks. As seen in the trailer, the player will need to shoot at other skaters and adjust their tactics depending on the opponent. Some foes have shields, smoke bombs, and other hazards to counter.

Rollerdrome looks like something that would be a multiplayer game because of the competitive aspect of its premise. At this time of writing, its promotional copy explicitly states that it's a single-player game. However, it does implement online leaderboards so that players can compete using their personal records. There’s even an “Out For Blood” mode, which is touted as the “most extreme test of skill and agility.”

It’s unclear if Rollerdome’s story will be as big as the self-imposed challenges like the aforementioned “Out For Blood” mode. At the very least, a story with the bare bones of a plot does exist.

What is the Rollerdrome setting and story?

Oh, and there are robots.

Roll7

Rollerdrome is set in a future where a blood sport called Rollerdrome has become the new public obsession. It has a dystopian backdrop where corporations have taken over, which is where the protagonist comes in. Our hero is out to uncover the secrets behind a corporation called Matterhorn and also become the Rollerdrome champion. The exact year is 2030 — not that we’re anywhere close to pitting rollerskaters against each other in battle royales.

So, what’s the protagonist’s connection to Matterhorn? What’s their motivation to become Rollerdrome champion? You either have to wait for more news or play the game to know the answer.
