'Bond 25' Release Date, Cast, Title, Trailer, and Lashana Lynch 007 Rumors
Spring 2020 is looking real good right about now because it means a new James Bond film will be arriving in theaters. Currently in the middle of production, the next installment is titled Bond 25 (for now) and will feature Daniel Craig reprising his role as MI6 Agent 007. This will mark Craig’s fifth time playing the famed spy first dreamt up by author Ian Fleming, and possibly his last as Craig passes the torch to a new actor.
Filming began on Bond 25 in Jamaica in May, where the film will begin before whisking audiences away on a new, tense mission. Lots of details, including the plot and descriptions for new characters in the world of Bond, are being kept under lock and key. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t have any new information about the forthcoming film.
Here’s what we know about Bond 25, from the release date to the returning cast and — bonus — we’re also going to explain what’s really going on about those rumors of a new 007, allegedly played by Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch.
What Is the Bond 25 Release Date?
We don’t have to wait too much longer for Bond 25. The next installment of the franchise arrives in theaters April 8, 2020.
Is There a Trailer For Bond 25?
There’s no trailer for Bond 25 just yet. If you’re itching to get a look at the forthcoming film, the James Bond 007 YouTube channel released an enticing behind-the-scenes look at production on the film in Jamaica. You can watch that video at the top of this page.
As for an official trailer, we might see one as early as winter 2019. With filming in progress as of July and a release date in April 2020, seeing something Bond 25-related appear during the holiday movie season is very possible.
Who Is Directing Bond 25?
The next director to bring the world of James Bond to life will be Cary Joji Fukunaga. Fukunaga inherits the director’s chair from Sam Mendes, who directed the last two films, Skyfall and Spectre.
Fukunaga may be most widely known for his work on Season 1 of HBO’s True Detective. He also directed Netflix’s mind-bending limited series Maniac starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, 2015’s Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba, and 2011’s Jane Eyre starring Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska.
What Is The Plot of Bond 25?
A detailed synopsis of Bond 25 has yet to be released.
What we do know about the plot of Bond 25 is that the film will open with Bond retiring from MI6 and heading down to Jamaica for a much less hectic way of life. That serenity is broken when Bond’s old friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) finds him, asking for his help in taking on a new enemy (Rami Malek) who possesses a dangerous technological weapon.
Who Is Returning For Bond 25?
In addition to Craig returning as James Bond, the following actors will reprise these James Bond roles:
- Ralph Fiennes as “M”
- Lea Seydoux as “Madeleine Swann”
- Ben Whishaw as “Q”
- Naomie Harris as “Eve Moneypenny”
- Jeffrey Wright as “Felix Leiter”
- Rory Kinnear as “Tanner”
And in a true surprise, The Guardian was one of many outlets to report in July that Christoph Waltz would return as Blofeld. Waltz last played the villain in 2015’s Spectre but the details on how Blofeld figures into Bond 25 are unclear, especially with Rami Malek cast to be the film’s primary villain.
Which Bond 25 Cast Members Are New?
There are a couple new actors who are joining Craig, Waltz, Fiennes, and the rest of the James Bond crew for this next film. They are:
- Rami Malek will play this film’s new villain. He was cast shortly after winning Best Actor at the Oscars for Bohemian Rhapsody.
- Lashana Lynch will play “Nomi.” Rumor has it she is playing the new Agent 007 but that remains unconfirmed (more on that below). Lynch was previously seen in Captain Marvel.
- Ana de Armas as “Paloma.” No details have been revealed about her character. She is best known for her role in Blade Runner 2049 and will be seen in Rian Johnson’s forthcoming Knives Out.
- Billy Magnussen joins the team in an undisclosed role. Magnussen’s previous roles include Ingrid Goes West and Netflix’s Maniac.
- David Dencik as “Waldo.” Details about Dencik’s character are unknown. He was most recently seen playing Mikhail Gorbachev in HBO’s Chernobyl.
What’s All This About Lashana Lynch Taking Over As Bond?
Over the weekend of July 12, news rapidly spread that Lashana Lynch’s character, Nomi, would be revealed as the new Agent 007 in Bond 25. A source speaking with The Daily Mail alleged the film would reveal Nomi to be the new 007 now that Bond has retired from MI6 and retired to Jamaica. Considering this is an unnamed source speaking with the already iffy Daily Mail, it’s best to take this with a big grain of salt until a more official source addresses it.
However, if Lynch does end up taking on the mantle of 007, it would be a monumentally modern move for the James Bond franchise. There has never been a non-white actor — let alone a non-male, non-white actor — in that role in the history of the franchise, and those in charge have often dodged giving clear answers as to why. Frequent defenses sit somewhere between “Bond was always male in Ian Fleming’s books” and “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That could all be in the franchise’s rearview mirror if Lynch really is the new 007.
How Many James Bond Films Should I Watch Before Bond 25?
The James Bond film franchise is more than 50 years old, so re-watching the entire thing just to prep for one film is a bit much. But it’s not a Herculean task since you have nine months until Bond 25 is out, giving you plenty of time to watch.
For the purposes of Bond 25, you should probably just watch all of the Bond films which feature Craig as Bond. They are:
- Casino Royale (2006)
- Quantum of Solace (2008)
- Skyfall (2012)
- Spectre (2015)
Once you finish binging, you’ll be all caught up and ready to see Craig in his next (and maybe final) turn as Bond.
Bond 25 arrives on April 8, 2020.
