'Mindhunter' Season 2 Release Date Reveal Confirms a Scary New Killer

Back to the world of serial killers we go.

Finally, some big news about Netflix’s Mindhunter Season 2 release date. Executive producer David Fincher recently confirmed in an interview on The Treatment podcast that Mindhunter will return on August 16 for Season 2. In that same interview, Fincher also confirmed a terrifying new serial killer would be introduced and will subsequently become integral to the season’s events.

It’s been two years since Mindhunter premiered on Netflix. Based on the non-fiction book of the same name written by former FBI agents John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, the series stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany as FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench, respectively. The pair are tasked with profiling killers across America in relation to the crimes they’re in prison for.

Over the course of the season, Holden and Bill realize there may be a class of killer the FBI has overlooked based on shared traits from the men they’re profiling and could help predict which future suspects who fit the bill. Season 2 is expected to go even deeper into Holden and Bill’s work as the focus on another case which gripped Atlanta, Georgia with fear between 1979 and 1981: the Atlanta child murders.

Fincher told Billboard back in 2017 that Season 2 would focus on the Atlanta child murders, so it’s fair to say viewers have had a sense of where this show would be going and which real-life figures would be involved in Mindhunter’s fictionalized exploration of the killings for almost two years. Fincher helped clear up any questions about which figures related to the murders would appear in Season 2.

During his Treatment interview, Fincher confirmed serial killer Wayne Williams would be a key character in Season 2. In real life, Williams is currently serving life in prison for killing two men in 1981 in Atlanta. He was believed to be tied to the Atlanta child murders, too, but a solid case against him never got made.

No new casting information, trailer release date, or similarly informative tidbits were shared by Fincher during the interview. But for now, we know even more about what we can expect from Season 2 and, crucially, when we can finally watch it.

Mindhunter Season 2 arrives on Netflix on August 16. Season 1 is available to stream now.
