DC's 'Legends of Tomorrow' Just Dropped the Best Trailer in TV History

One of the best superhero shows also just dropped one of the single best trailers in TV history. This is not hyperbole: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is nothing but fun, and the midseason trailer for its current season shows why.

On Monday, while most of the internet was tweeting jokes during Apple’s streaming service announcement, The CW released a midseason sizzle reel for Legends of Tomorrow Season 4. The crossover series continues its demonic escapades this year, with the Legends still teaming up with Constantine (Matt Ryan) to round up fugitives they’ve accidentally unleashed throughout history.

The series will return from hiatus to The CW on April 1.

The trailer starts off with a bang, teasing Supergirl, the Green Arrow, and The Flash, only to reveal it’s actually just Sara (Caity Lotz), Nate (Nick Zano), and everyone’s favorite Time Agent, Gary (Adam Tsekhman) in stolen cosplay.

“We should have done the crossover,” Nate quips, referencing the fact that Legends of Tomorrow was not included in the annual 2018 crossover special. While the real Supergirl, Green Arrow, and Flash teamed up with Batwoman in “Elseworlds,” the Legends fought against… muppets. (And it was awesome.)

The trailer continues teasing the rest of the season, which will involve bizarre settings such as Mexican lucha libre, a cross-country road trip, Bollywood, and what appears to be a self-parody of the Arrowverse franchise itself. At one point, the Legends end up in front of a crowd demanding to see superheroes.

“People need franchise superheroes to feel safe,” says Lotz’s Sara Lance in voice over. (You can almost hear the biting sarcasm in her tone when she says it.) Cut to a falling John Constantine, an outsider character in the DCU who is anything but a franchise superhero.

To outside viewers, the trailer for Legends of Tomorrow might seem like plain old fun (and it is!). But for fans who have followed the series from the start — beginning as a halfway decent spin-off to a totally bonkers, rip-roaring genre-bender — the midseason trailer proves that Legends hasn’t lost its hot streak since Beebo. (All hail Beebo.)

"We should have done the crossover."

The CW

There is to be a lot of change for the Arrowverse in the near future. Season 8 of Arrow, the gritty superhero show that started this whole thing, will be the show’s last as the series ends around the time of the epic “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event takes place. It’s unknown what will become of The Flash, currently in its fifth season, and Supergirl, currently airing its fourth.

But no matter what, let’s hope nothing changes for Legends of Tomorrow. Just keep these guy out of the timeline and let them have their fun. Because when they have fun, fans do too.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return to The CW on April 1, 8 p.m. Eastern.
