'Captain Marvel' Post-Credits Scene: Does It Have One? A Spoiler-Free Guide

The wait is finally (almost) over! Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, bringing us the first Marvel movie with a female lead — and one step closer to Avengers: Endgame. But before you head to your local movie theater this weekend, you’re probably wondering if there’s a Captain Marvel post-credits scene (or scenes).

Short answer: yes. There are two Captain Marvel post-credits scenes, with one plot-heavy scene coming midway through the credits and a shorter gag at the very end (and it’s worth sticking around for both of them). Here’s a bit more context on what that means for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and exactly what’s in store for this movie. (No spoilers, we swear!)

This two-post-credits scene system has pretty much become Marvel’s go-to, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that we’re seeing it in Captain Marvel. After all, we’ve been trained to expect it. What does come as a surprise, however, is that this time, the end-credits scene is actually worth watching.

You see, recent Marvel movies that used the same post-credits formula have had mixed results at best. Remember Ant-Man and the Wasp? The mid-credits scene was awesome, finally placing the movie within the broader context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Avengers: Infinity War while setting up a huge cliffhanger. Then came the final post-credits scene, a dumb gag (a giant ant playing drums? really?) that we’d already seen in a previous trailer.

Then there was Infinity War itself, which featured a pivotal mid-credits scene but no end-credits joke, which made sense considering the dark tone of that movie’s ending. On the other end of the spectrum lies the original Avengers, which essentially trolled fans with a shot of the heroes eating shawarma.

With Captain Marvel, it seems like Marvel’s finally nailed the post-credits formula. The first scene is thrilling and moves the plot forward with shocking intensity. If you really want to leave after that you can, but it’s worth sticking around for an end-credits scene that’s hilarious, even if it doesn’t really do much for the MCU plot.

Here’s the spoiler-free official synopsis for Captain Marvel:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.
