'Game of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers: Why Arya Could Kill the Ice Dragon

by Meredith Jacobs

Game of Thrones Season 8 is approaching, and while we’re still waiting for an official trailer, teasers and previous seasons are enough for fans to speculate as to how the series will end. The latest clue was a clip of Arya reacting with delight at the sight of a dragon, and a new theory could explain how a Season 7 scene will influence a key moment in Game of Thrones Season 8.

Warning: Possible spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 below.

In HBO’s latest sizzle reel, fans were treated to mere seconds of new footage, but even days after its release, we’re still talking about Arya’s reaction to a dragon. While the usual reaction to seeing one flying above is fear, her’s is the exact opposite. She begins to smile as the clip ends, and her love of dragons, which has been established on the show, is why.

Redditor u/blairacton has a theory that takes that moment and Arya’s reunion with her brother Bran into consideration.

In Season 7 Episode 4, Bran offered Arya a Valyrian steel dagger, explaining it was “wasted” on him. There had to be a reason he gave it to her, right? Is it just because she was the warrior out of the Stark siblings present at that moment? Or was there something more to it?

Just how important was Bran giving Arya this dagger in Season 7?

Redditor u/blairacton thinks Bran is “sad … almost as if he knows what is going to happen with the dagger” in that moment. However, so far, Bran’s abilities don’t appear to include seeing the future, so it could simply be that he knows that having that weapon in her possession means she’ll have to be in danger to use it.

As we know, Valyrian steel can kill White Walkers, but it’s unclear if it will have any effect on the wight dragon Viserion. According to this fan’s theory, however, Arya will die trying to take out Viserion using the dagger based on her reaction to Drogon in the teaser. The fan does acknowledge that the moment may simply be because Arya likes dragons, but they may be onto something with regards to the dagger.

Arya is a warrior on Game of Thrones. There is a huge battle coming up against the Army of the Dead, and considering she has the Valyrian steel dagger in her possession, it’s pretty much a given that she’ll be fighting.

However, with the big battle against the Night King reportedly coming in Episode 3, according to Vladimir Furdik’s comments at a fan convention in Hungary translated by Mashable, it seems unlikely that Arya would die (if she does at all) that early on in the season.

Arya has a list, yes, and at some point in the final season, she’s going to have to make a move to cross Cersei off it. But before she does, maybe she also kills some of the Army of the Dead with that dagger. Maybe even the Night King’s ice dragon.

Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres on Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
