American Horror Story: Apocalypse might be finished, but we’re already looking ahead to what’s coming next in the AHS franchise. FX already renewed the show for American Horror Story Season 9, but what else do we know or can we infer about it?

Which cast members will return? What story will be told? And when will the American Horror Story Season 9 release date arrive? Here’s what you need to know.

When Is the American Horror Story Season 9 Release Date?

Since 2011’s AHS Season 1, Murder House, a new season has premiered every fall in September or October on FX. It’s likely that Season 9 will follow that pattern and premiere in the fall of 2019.

It will likely also air Wednesdays at 10 p.m., just like every season except for Season 7, which aired Tuesdays.

When Can We Expect a Trailer for American Horror Story Season 9?

That depends on how much we know about the season’s theme ahead of time. FX released trailers for Seasons 7 and 8 in the weeks leading up to the premiere but only posted teasers hinting at possible themes before Season 6’s premiere. So really it all depends on whether FX plans to surprise us with the American Horror Story Season 9 theme.

Speaking of which…

What Will American Horror Story Season 9’s Plot/Theme Be?

Though some wondered if Season 9 might basically be Apocalypse Part 2 when it seemed like there was too much to wrap up in the finale, that won’t be the case. Season 8 ended with Mallory defeating Michael and the introduction of a new Antichrist, but nothing suggests that would carry over into next season.

Beyond that it’s tough to say what type of theme the next season will take on. AHS has already showed us it can do everything from historical to topical to post-apocalyptic? What’s next? An Alien-style sci-fi-horror? A Gremlins knock-off?

It could literally be almost anything.

Who Will Be in the American Horror Story Season 9 Cast?

We’re likely to see many of the same actors from the previous eight seasons of AHS, but no announcements have been made yet.

However, series creator Ryan Murphy may have already teased a bit of casting news. He posted a photo of Cody Fern, Finn Wittrock and Darren Criss on Instagram on November 15 with the caption, “Cooking up something good for these three.” All three have appeared on AHS: Fern in Apocalypse, Wittrock in Freak Show, Hotel and Roanoke and Criss in Hotel.

So it seems possible we could see the three actors in AHS Season 9 — or some other Ryan Murphy TV show.

Will Season 9 Be the Final Season?

That one we can answer definitively: no. FX has already renewed AHS for Season 10.

“Ryan asked for a 10th season of American Horror Story which we were happy to give to him,” FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told Deadline in August.

So that pretty much settles it, at least until we get to Season 11…

American Horror Story Season 9 will air on FX.
