Marvel’s Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 offers a thrilling adventure that exists in its own continuity for the character, and much like the Batman Arkham games it so often gets compared to, there are a ton of powers, skills, and abilities to choose from. So how do players know what to prioritize when playing *Spider-Man?
There are 28 total suits that Spider-Man wears, and almost all of them offer unique powers. But offering even more nuance are three slots for Suit Mods that Spider-Man gets to equip. Much like Suits and Suit Powers, these can be swapped out on the fly, even mid-battle, and they enhance various aspects of Spidey’s combat arsenal.
On top of that, Spidey gets to equip three Suit Mods at once. Focus on getting the following 7 Suit Mods, ordered by how soon players can access them in the game.
1. Long Range Scanner
This early Suit Mod should always take one of the player’s three slots when approaching any stealth-oriented mission. Long Range Scanner simply increases the AR scanner range, meaning that Spidey can spot all of the enemies in the surrounding area to help judge whether or not it’s safe to stealthily take them down. It’s activated by pressing R3, or down on the right analog stick.
2. Combat Analyzer
Unless players have already hit the level cap, they should always have Combat Analyzer equipped. It increases XP gained from defeating enemies, making it perhaps the single most important Suit Mod in the entire game.
Upon level-up, Spider-Man often gains increased health or melee damage, which is only going to make his crimefighting superheroics that much easier over time. But each level-up also grants him a Skill point he can use to purchase more skills. Keep this one equipped for the entire game and you’ll be grateful.
3. Discharge Power Cells
Perfect Dodge is an essential Skill, activating Spider-Sense to give Spider-Man a small window to dodge incoming attacks. This mod enhances that a great deal by increasing damage for every perfectly-timed dodge. The two most defining parts of active combat — outside of stealth attacks — involves executing perfect dodges and building up enough focus to perform finishing moves that instantly take down enemies.
But with Discharge Power Cells, even standard attacks become that much more viable during combat.
4. Silent Step
The bread and butter of any stealth build, Silent Step makes it so that enemies take longer to detect Spider-Man. That means more time for stealth takedowns and other stealthy maneuvers. There are many Challenges during side missions and even main story missions where stealthily taking down enemies one at a time will prove a much more efficient strategy, or even an essential part of what’s going on.
Stealth Takedowns in particular require that Spider-Man sneak up directly behind enemies and press the Square button, and because many enemies wander around on a specific patrol route, it’s very easy for them to spot the webcrawler. With Silent Step, that becomes much easier.
5. Kinetic Power Cells
This mod increases the rate of focus regeneration generally speaking, so when combined with the Advanced Suit power Battle Focus and other mods and skills, Spider-Man can heal himself more frequently and dole out more combat finishers. This one remains generally useful in every single combat scenario.
Other suit mods might generate more Focus from Gadget attacks or Web attacks, but a more generalized approach with this ability seems preferable.
6. Bio Scanner
Another essential stealth skill that combos perfectly with the Long Range Scanner, Bio Scanner highlights any scanned enemies — even through walls. With this, Spidey can scope out the entire surrounding area and plan stealthy methods of attack while remaining aware of every enemy. The highlights make it clear, even from a distance, what direction enemies are facing. So this one also helps determine what specific enemies might see as they wander about the area.
In any circumstance involving stealthy attacks, both Bio Scanner and Long Range Scanner should be equipped, along with a Stealth-based Suit Power.
7. Threat Sensors
This mod effectively enhances Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense, slowing time down after he uses it to execute a Perfect Dodge. So especially when combined with the effect of Discharge Power Cells to increase damage after a Perfect Dodge, Threat Sensors becomes incredibly potent in terms of controlling the battlefield and dishing out damage.
Performing a perfect dodge then becomes even more important that dealing damage to enemies, because doing so will slow down time and increase the damage dealt by all attacks. Some skills Spidey can focus on enhance that even more.
It’s for these reasons that this list omits any and all defensive suit powers — in the ideal world, Spider-Man should never even get hit by a punch or bullet.
