Spider-Man will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite that heartbreaking “I don’t feel so good” moment at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. However, it appears that Peter Parker will wear yet another suit in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, as he’s reportedly going to need a suit more befitting of a young man.
The quotes comes from costume designer Louise Frogley, who did the costumes for Spider-Man: Homecoming as well as Iron Man 3 and the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp. Frogley spoke with India West over the weekend, and revealed that while she isn’t personally working on Homecoming 2, she claims to have some idea of what’s going on with Spidey’s look.
“I am not actually working on that film, but the costumes will have very big changes because, in the film, Spider-Man becomes more like man and not teenager,” she said, after dicussing the challenges of creating the first suit for the previous movie.
“Marvel researched very thoroughly, and they were very clever about the decision and decided it should be pretty simple,” she said. “As a young guy, he had his homemade suit, and then he has this beautiful suit that Tony Stark gives him, which is pretty cool.”
In Infinity War, Peter gets a new suit — the one that Tony Stark offered him at the end of Homecoming. This one appears to be inspired by the extra-limbed “Iron Spider” costume from the Civil War comic art, but he might not wear it again the next time around. (Maybe it got lost forever when everything turned into dust due to Thanos’ snap of the Infinity Gauntlet snap.)
One of the things that made Homecoming so refreshing after two different, very recent Spider-Man franchises, was that Peter Parker really felt like a teenager. If Frogley’s info on Homecoming 2 is correct, he’ll be getting older, though hopefully he won’t be too far removed from that youthful energy of the first flick.
It would make sense that he’d be more grown up, though, and not just because actor Tom Holland is growing up in the real world. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige said back in April that Homecoming 2 would be about Peter’s attempt to “go back to normal life” after Infinity War. Dying on another planet probably ages an impressionable teen.
It’s also quite likely that Peter won’t have Tony Stark around to build him another suit. Iron Man is not going to be in Homecoming 2 the way he was in the first film, and it’s widely speculated that Avengers 4 will be Robert Downey Jr.’s final bow as Iron Man — perhaps Iron Man will die or retire, for real, to an off-screen happy ending. Peter’s next suit might need to be a more back-to-basics ordeal without fancy Stark tech.
What exactly will the new suit look like? Seems possible it will be inspired by another alternate suit from the comics, like the Spider-Man 2099 suit in the art at the top of this story. Or, maybe it will be a simpler tweak on the iconic red and blue suit. Costume changes are standard for MCU movies — Iron Man’s not the only hero who updates their wardrobe from film to film. But, as one of the franchise’s most promising and youngest heroes, it’ll be very interesting to see where Spider-Man goes with his costumes.
Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out on July 5, 2019.
