'Black Panther' Dora Milaje to Team Up With Spider-Man in New Comic

Marvel

Black Panther might have broken records and delivered a boon for representation in film, but it also brought the glorious, lethal women of the Dora Milaje to screens across the globe. Now this powerful group of warrior women is going on their own mission to protect national security in a new comic series, first with Spider-Man and then later with other Marvel heroes.

On Friday, author Nnedi Okorafor discussed her new Marvel project with Vogue, which is a three-part comic book arc focusing on the Dora Milaje, as illustrated by Alberto Jiménez Alburquerque and Terry Dodson. Each installment is a one-shot comic book detailing a Dora Milaje adventure that takes the women across the Marvel Universe.

In Wakanda Forever: The Amazing Spider-Man, the action begins in New York City with Okoye, Ayo, and Aneka teaming up with everyone’s favorite webslinger: Spider-Man.

We first met the Wakandan fighting force when one of its members, Ayo, debuted in Captain America: Civil War. But after their huge presence in Black Panther, Marvel fans fell in love with the Dora Milaje.

In Wakanda Forever: The Amazing Spider-Man, the three members of the Dora Milaje will investigate a threat to national security in New York. During this trip, they will connect with Peter Parker and work with him as Spider-Man.

What readers get is a story that hones in on who these women are as people, and as heroes, by separating them from their king and his kingdom. “Typically when you see them, they’re with T’Challa, representing and protecting him,” Okorafor told Vogue. “Now you’re going to see the Dora Miljae for the first time as an independent entity; they’re not under the shadow of the throne.”

Black Panther introduced many new and compelling characters to from the Marvel universe, and fans are hungry to see more of Wakanda both in the films and in comics. “People have craved these types of characters for a while, and I don’t think that craving is going to pass; it’s something that is here to stay,” Okorafor said of female Marvel characters.

When Avengers: Infinity War comes out in April, we’ll see a lot more from Okoye, Shuri, and thier home in Wakanda. But this upcoming comic arc will spend more time telling the stories the Dora Milaje.

When sharing the Vogue story on Twitter Marvel Editor Will Moss provided noted that this story following the Dora Milaje will continue in July with Wakanda Forever: X-Men and Wakanda Forever: Avengers in August, which will presumably feature tons of other Marvel heroes.

So it looks like fans of the Dora Milaje are in for one great summer.

Wakanda Forever: The Amazing Spider-Man will be released in June.
