'Infinity War': Iron Man's New Costume Sure Looks Like Spider-Man's

Marvel fans know well that Spider-Man is getting a nifty costume upgrade, courtesy of Tony Stark, for Avengers: Infinity War. But, based on new magazine covers for Marvel’s upcoming event film, it looks like Iron Man is wearing the multi-legged Iron Spider costume fans know from the comics. Kind of.

On Thursday, Entertainment Weekly unveiled a whopping 15 variant covers for its March 23 issue devoted to Avengers: Infinity War. The covers give a generous glimpse at some of the new costumes, including Captain America’s “Nomad” suit, Black Widow, Nebula, Scarlet Witch, and Thor. Spider-Man (Tom Holland), in his Iron Spider suit, gets a cover all on his own, as does his mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), whose new Iron Man suit is just as crazy freaky and surprisingly spider-like.

In the comics, Tony Stark gave Peter Parker an upgraded suit, nicknamed “Iron Spider,” when Spidey was on Tony’s team throughout the 2006 series Civil War. The fancy suit had extra arms on it, making Spidey look much more like his namesake. The Marvel films echoed that storyline, since Tony gave Spidey a suit in the movie Captain America: Civil War, but in last summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony gifted Peter another suit. This new gold and red costume better resembles the Iron Spider outfit (with dashes of Todd McFarlane’s designs thrown in).

The Infinity War toys from Hasbro revealed that Spidey’s new suit will have legs sprouting from his back, just like the Iron Spider in the comics. But in the Entertainment Weekly covers, Tony Stark’s got legs sprouting out of his costume on his own. In fact, anime fans may think Tony Stark has been watching too much Gundam Wing.

Are we sure Tony Stark didn't keep all the Iron Spider upgrades for himself?

The other covers are neat as well and feature some unlikely MCU pairings: Winter Soldier and Mantis, Nebula and Scarlet Witch, Falcon and Gamora, War Machine and Drax, Star-Lord and Okoye, and Thor with Rocket and Groot. Expect Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy to be mighty best friends.
