Killer New Zombie Movie Looks Like 'Tucker & Dale vs. Zombies'

A zombie apocalypse in small-town rural America.

A new zombie movie set in a small Southern town looks and feels like it might as well be a spiritual sequel to Tucker & Dale vs. Evil with equal parts horrifying and hilarious.

On Friday, Gravitas Ventures released a poster and announced the official release date for Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies, in which an experimental herbicide turns the residents of Charleston, Mississippi into zombies. Lonnie (Timothy Haug) is a crop duster pilot that joins up with a motley group of survivors trying to escape.

Formerly known as Kudzu Zombies, Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies has a kind of apocalyptic rural charm to it. A lot of zombie movies explore urban environments (Dawn of the Dead) or life on the road (Zombieland), but this story explores how regular rural Americans would deal with this kind of horror. In that way, its horror-comedy vibe feels a lot like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, but with zombies.

MRW they're out of Doritos but have plenty of Lay's Potato Chips.

Granted, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil takes place in West Virginia and Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies is obviously in the South, but they both exist squarely in a kind of subgenre we might as well call “charming rural horror-comedy,” along with the likes of Zombeavers or even the middle section of Diary of the Dead, when they struggle to survive in Amish country.

Check out the glorious poster:

Yes, that’s a zombie clown tucked in the background of the poster, looking like the distant cousin of It. There’s some sort of carnival or festival that occurs during the movie, so we get all sorts of insane carn-age like this moment:

Is there anything scarier than a zombie clown?

And this one right here:

Someone who can breathe flames might be the single most helpful Carnival character in a zombie outbreak.

Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies won “Goriest Film” at the 2017 FANtastic Horror Film Festival in San Diego, so rest assured that things get pretty insane in this movie.

*Attack of the Southern Fried Zombies will be released on March 13, 2018.**

A new release trailer is coming soon, but for now, check out the previous trailer:
