How to Watch NASA's Major Kepler Announcement Today
This has us at the edge of our seats.
For the last week or so, NASA has been dropping hints about a big announcement involving its exoplanet-hunting Kepler space telescope. Finally, on Thursday, NASA will deliver that announcement that they’ve been so vague about. It won’t be aliens, but it’ll be good.
Here’s the gist: The teleconference will be held at 1 p.m. Eastern, and it’ll be live stream here. It will involve a new discovery from Kepler, which has apparently been made possible with the help of Google’s machine learning technology. Three NASA scientists and a Google software engineer will be leading the conference.
The Kepler telescope — which is essentially a traveling space camera — was launched in the spring of 2009 and has since been beaming images of deep space back to NASA. It was originally designed to survey a specific part of the Milky Way, but since 2012, it’s been hard at work in its K2 mission searching for exoplanets.
At this point, we have a few ideas as to what this announcement could be, but nothing’s confirmed. While it won’t be a planet full of dogs, it’ll definitely still be awesome. We hope.
