New 'Last Jedi' Poster Could Be Rey's Earliest Days With Luke Skywalker

Lucasfilm

Jedi don’t usually user blasters. Luke Skywalker often did, though, which showcased his versatility and the differentiation between Jedi generations. The Jedi have to adapt. Will Rey adapt more than any Jedi before her in Star Wars: The Last Jedi? A new poster certainly makes it seem that way.

The recently revealed Chinese poster details Rey on Ahch-To in what looks to be the early stages of her Jedi training. In the image, Rey is wearing the exact same outfit that she arrived in at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And, perhaps more notably than that, she still has the blaster Han Solo gave her strapped to her leg.

Now, Luke Skywalker has been known to use a blaster or two while battling Empirical forces during the original Star Wars trilogy. After he becomes a full-blown Jedi Knight, though, Luke rarely uses a hand-held blaster — but he does use them. He gets hold of one in Jabba’s palace in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and while his preference for his lightsaber is clear throughout the film, Luke clearly has no issue with using a blaster.

And while Luke seems to have wandered a bit off track in The Last Jedi, it seems likely that he’ll try to train Rey to hold the same values as him.

Rey, a former scavenger and frankly a survivalist, probably feels most comfortable with several weapons on her person at all times. It makes sense why she’d keep Han’s blaster nearby in the early stages of her training. But as Rey seems determined to be a full-blown Jedi, she might try to take up the old ways once again and abandon her blaster.

It seems likely that Luke might discourage her from doing so. It’s a dangerous galaxy out there and no one knows that better than Luke.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15. Check out all of Inverse’s coverage on the film right here.
