It wasn’t long ago that smoking weed in a movie or TV show could throw a character into a state of unbridled psychosis. Contemporary portrayals of the drug may be accurate, but it wasn’t long ago that movie and TV weed could give users hallucinations, freakouts, and much much more.

Up until about a decade ago, depictions of marijuana use in TV and movies was wildly inaccurate. Psyche, mood, and long-term effects of using marijuana were all scientifically inaccurate. Perhaps the most memorable trope was the marijuana-induced hallucination, which is usually very funny but also wrong. It’s not a psychedelic, after all.
