'Stranger Things' 2 Trailer Delves into Dark Human Experiments

Hopefully, Eleven will never push herself too far past the limitations of her powers. A new trailer for Stranger Things Season 2 hints that she might follow in her mom’s footsteps: death by way of Hawkins Laboratory experiments.

“Alleged experiments, abuse” and “Dr. Martin Brenner named in lawsuit” flash across the screen as newspaper clippings, referencing what fans of Stranger Things Season 1 already know: Hawkins Laboratory is shady as shit, and they’ve done some awful things to some helpless people.

In the trailer, a woman (perhaps Eleven’s mother) mutters the same words and phrases over and over again, growing more panicked by the second: sunflower; three to the right; four to the left; rainbow; and the number 450. These words are accompanied by corresponding images, loud static, the sound of a defibrillator, and images of beautiful young women.

Most disturbingly, a close-up shot of a young woman’s nose bleeding transitions into a similar shot of Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) nose beginning to bleed. In Season 1, Eleven’s nose would start to bleed when she overexerted her powers; maybe Eleven’s mother, Terry Ives, was bestowed with these same gifts as her daughter via experimentation and was pushed too far.

The video ends with a heart monitor chiming out one long note, indicating death.

Hopefully, this isn’t a hint at Eleven’s fate in Season 2.

Stranger Things Season 2 premieres on Netflix on October 27.
