'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Poster Might Answer a Big Jaeger Question

Stacker Pentecost’s son is ready to do battle. Jake Pentecost actor John Boyega took to Twitter on Tuesday to share a brand-new poster for the upcoming sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, Pacific Rim: Uprising. While stunning, the poster ignites an interesting question.

The poster, mostly in black-and-white, features Boyega staring out at the viewer in front of a massive Jaeger with burning orange eyes and, surprisingly, an orange core. Might this colored core indicate Jake’s Jaeger has a nuclear core?

In the original film, Charlie Hunnam’s Raleigh Becket and Rinko Kikuchi’s Mako Mori piloted Gipsy Danger into the breach to defeat the Kaiju and their masters. What allowed Gipsy to cause such damage was the Arc-9 nuclear reactor at its core, an unusual power source for a Jaeger so late in the game. Raleigh detonated Gipsy’s core and escaped just in the nick of time, the nuclear explosion closing the breach and, supposedly, stopping the threat to Earth.

That threat will return in Pacific Rim: Uprising. With how useful Gipsy’s nuclear core turned out to be, maybe humans decided nuclear power was the only way to go with future Jaegers. Maybe that’s why Boyega’s Jaeger seems to have a glowing heart.
