With the success of Deadpool’s R-rated, fourth wall-breaking action and humor, you might expect that any upcoming version of the character would adhere to that formula pretty strictly. But, Donald Glover’s upcoming animated Deadpool series will be a departure from the films.
“It’ll be really different from the movies,” FX CEO John Landgraf told the Television Critics Association on Wednesday. “It’s animated and they’re live-action, but also it has a different tone and editorial voice as evidenced by Donald and Stephen Glover, who have their own voice and tone. We really wanted to make something that was distinctly different from the movies.”
Even if you ignore Donald and Stephen Glover’s credentials (they’re both writers on the series Atlanta), it’s exciting that they don’t want to make a carbon copy of the Deadpool films. And not just to see a different interpretation of the character. Ultimately, film is a more limited medium than animation, so there’s a chance of seeing even crazier stuff in the animated series.
A brief clip showing Deadpool jumping onto a moving car was shown at the TCA. However, there was no news on when the series will premiere. “We’ve picked it up to series but I can’t tell you when it’s going to be scheduled yet because it’s gotta be great,” Landgraf said.
Different or not, it’s reassuring to see that FX is willing to take the time to make sure that audiences respond just as warmly to the animated series as Fox did with the films.
