New 'Last Jedi' Poster Reunites Luke With His Old Lightsaber

Even though Luke Skywalker constructed a new lightsaber in Return of the Jedi, it looks like he’ll be handling his old one at some point in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In striking new character posters for The Last Jedi, both Rey and Luke are gripping the same iconic lightsaber, previously owned by Luke’s father, Anakin.

On Saturday, Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: Episode VIII —The Last Jedi, revealed six new character posters featuring Leia, Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Poe, and Luke. All the posters are tinged with red, and the eyes of each character are obscured. In the poster featuring Rey, she’s holding the hilt of the lightsaber she picked up in The Force Awakens, the one that used to belong to Luke before he got his hand chopped of on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back. But … weirdly, the poster featuring Luke has him gripping that same lightsaber, too. Will Rey and Luke share this lightsaber in the movie? What happened to his other one?

In Return of the Jedi, Luke has a totally different lightsaber, which he built himself, sporting a green blade instead of a blue one. Will he just not be using that one in this movie? Did he get rid of it because he decided to go into hiding?

Here’s the Rey poster with the lightsaber:

Maybe the true meaning of the title “The Last Jedi” also refers to a lightsaber shortage in the galaxy.

The Last Jedi opens on December 15.
