Here's Who Makes Out in the 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Trailer

HBO

The first trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 dropped Wednesday, setting the stage for Dany and Jon (separately, for now) attempting to take the Iron Throne from Cersei. We see dragons, Jon running around near the Wall, and Arya sighing and picking at a sad little campfire. We also see two new couples getting steamy. One couple won’t really surprise anyone who’s been watching the show, but the second pairing comes right out of left field.

First up on the hook-up docket are Grey Worm and Missandei, two of Daenerys’s closest allies, who have been innocently flirting with each other for several seasons. Missandei is a freed slave from Astapor whose role has been significantly expanded in the HBO TV show, though the show mysteriously removed any mention of Missandei using her fingers to bring Dany to orgasm at night (which happens regularly in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels).

Will Grey Worm and Missandei finally give into the romantic tension that's marked their conversations for several seasons?

HBO

Grey Worm is another freed slave, though unlike Missandei, he’s one of the “Unsullied,” or boys who were taken from their homes as children to be trained as mindless fighting drones. Grey Worm, who keeps his slavery name in both the books and TV show after Dany releases him, was castrated with the rest of his Unsullied battalion, so he doesn’t have a penis or testicles. Before you start wondering how he’ll have sex with Missandei without genitals, keep in mind that people without genitals or the use of their genitals have satisfying sex all the time.

We don’t know whether Grey Worm and Missandei will graduate from undressing together to engaging in sexual play, but the clip suggests as much. It’s probably worth noting that Grey Worm doesn’t exactly look enthused.

The other couple to get it on — much more explicitly — in the trailer are Yara Greyjoy and Ellaria Sand. Yara, called Asha in Martin’s novels, flirted successfully with Dany last season. Though the book character uses sexuality to manipulate others, including her brother Theon (who doesn’t know he’s flirting with his sister at first), HBO’s Yara is played with more genuine emotion by Gemma Whelan. In Season 6, we watched Yara engage in the ancient Greyjoy ritual of having sex with a woman before battle — she took an attractive woman to bed while telling her male relatives and friends she was “about to fuck the tits off this one.”

Get away from her, Yara. She wears poison lipstick!

HBO

The quick shot of Yara making out with Ellaria makes Ellaria look like the aggressor. The only sexual information we’ve ever gotten about Ellaria is that she used to have sex with Oberyn Martell, though they both enjoyed bedding women and men. However, Ellaria’s come a long way since her first sexy appearance on the show, and the horrific loss of Oberyn to the Mountain has charred her emotional core. Having murdered Cersei and Jaime’s innocent daughter last season with a kiss, it could be that Ellaria is trying to poison Yara rather than pleasure her. They’re both backing Dany, though, so it would be a major betrayal if that’s what’s going on here.

Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO, at 9 p.m. Eastern.
