Why Clara Might Fly Her TARDIS to 'Doctor Who' Xmas Special

Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald might just fly her own TARDIS back onto Doctor Who in time for the Christmas special. If recent rumors turn out to be true, she’ll make another appearance just as Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor makes his final bow.

The rumor comes from reports that Eddie’s Diner in Cardiff has been booked by BBC for filming in July, which is when Peter Capaldi’s final episodes are supposedly being filmed. The Diner was used in 2010’s “The Impossible Astronaut” and then again for the Season 9 finale, “Hell Bent.” Most importantly, Eddie’s Diner is the permanent form (at least on the outside) for the TARDIS that Clara and Me ran away in after the Doctor’s entire memory of Clara was wiped.

Jenna Coleman’s return would hardly come as a surprise considering every contemporary incarnation of the Doctor has lingered through some kind of farewell to each of his most important companions.

David Tennant’s 10th Doctor said goodbye to just about everybody, and Matt Smith’s 11th experienced some sort of Amy Pond vision in his final moments. Regardless of how well the Doctor and Bill get on, Clara will likely remain the principal companion to the 12th Doctor. As such, it would be almost strange for her not to at least make a quick cameo before he regenerates into the 13th Doctor.

Whether it will be little more than a glorified cameo, Clara playing an important role in the final hours of 12, or nothing at all remains to be seen — and who knows if or how Maisie Williams’s Lady Me might also factor in.

Doctor Who airs Saturdays on BBC and BBC America at 9 p.m. Eastern.
