Taika Waititi Plays Familiar 'Thor' Character in 'Ragnarok'

This week, Marvel invited press to a development lot at Disney Studios, revealing that Thor Ragnarok director Taika Waititi plays a comedic sidekick in the upcoming film. The character, Korg, appears in Marvel’s Planet Hulk comics, and he even had a cameo in The Dark World.

The version of Korg we all saw in Thor: The Dark World was simply a rock creature on Vanaheim whom Thor beat up super easily, using his hammer. When we see a friendlier version of Korg in Ragnarok, he’ll explain the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) to Thor, and help him survive the gladiator ring alongside another Planet Hulk character, Miek.

Some comics background: Miek is an insectoid warrior and Korg fears humanoids because his people (post the Thor attack) assume all humans have super powers.

Waititi teased his Korg reveal back in September on Instagram, though many fans weren’t sure what he was referring to:

Vanity Fair reports, “The new design allows for more range of emotion and expression on the Kronan’s face, which will come in handy as he befriends Thor and shows him the ropes.” This means Hulk’s presence in Ragnarok will not be the only pull from the Planet Hulk comics.

Thor Ragnarok hits theaters November 3.
