Luke Skywalker Takes Back His Lightsaber in 'Last Jedi' Footage

The first footage from Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi has been screened, and it sounds like Luke Skywalker takes back his old lightsaber from Rey.

On Wednesday, during an annual meeting of the Disney shareholders, attendees were treated to new footage from The Last Jedi. The footage reportedly included glimpses of Rey, Chewbacca, Finn, and Leia, as well as the meeting between Rey and Luke Skywalker. According to Daniel Miller of The Los Angeles Times, the footage shows Luke taking back the lightsaber Rey offered him during the cliffhanger ending to The Force Awakens. The footage apparently doesn’t confirm whether or not Luke still has his other green-bladed lightsaber in addition to this one, which was previously wielded by his father. Miller also confirmed that Luke Skywalker’s first words to Rey are “Who are you?”

Miller also tweeted several details about the footage, which including “mountains, oceans, and forest,” making it sound like a lot of other Star Wars planets we’ve seen before. Oceans could be Luke’s planet Ahch-To. Forests? Maybe a return to Endor, the home of the Ewoks?

Miller also said an X-wing fighter was also being shot at by a bigger ship and was wobbling “like a wounded bird.” And though General Leia appears in “military garb,” she doesn’t actually speak and the glimpse of Carrie Fisher in the role is “only for a second.”

The footage from The Last Jedi was only screened for those at this shareholder meeting. It’s unclear if this clip will be exactly the same as what will be contained in the first trailer for the film, which is expected to publicly debut at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Orlando, FL on April 13.

Luke taking back Rey’s offering of his old family lightsaber also was taken by those in attendance as something of a “joke.” But, maybe it’s no joke. If Rey is truly to become a Jedi, according to tradition, she’ll have to build her own lightsaber.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15, 2017.
