Naughty Dog Releases a Sneak Peek of Upcoming 'Last of Us' Sequel

Ellie is older and apparently full of hate.

As this year’s PlayStation Experience showcase came to a close, Sony surprised everyone by releasing a sneak peek at Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated new video game, The Last of Us Part II. Still in early development, the game is a direct sequel to the original released in 2013.

In the trailer we see an older, all tatted-up version of Ellie who is sporting some new ink and serenading us with a chilling song on her acoustic guitar.

A dead body is crumpled on the ground near her and we see blood running down her cheek as she strums away. Joel — a friend to Ellie and star of the 2013 game — shows up as she finishes her song. He takes a look around and asks, “What are you doing kiddo? You really gonna go through with this?”

She sets the guitar down before responding. “I’m gonna find and I’m gonna kill every last one of them,” she coldly replies. But who they are is a bit of a mystery. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic, with Joel and Ellie traveling across the United States, avoiding not only a hoard of cannibalistic creatures — aka zombies, who were infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus — but also defending themselves against any hostile humans who may cross their path.

It looks like the game makers are switching things up a bit, focusing the game’s attention and viewpoints to Ellie. The events in this game tell Ellie and Joel’s story, and pick up a few years after the last game leaves off. Ellie is now 19, and she appears noticeably older and tougher and ready to kill in this snippet.

This clip could be the beginning of a great revenge story. But whether or not she’s getting revenge on a gaggle of hungry walkers — or the game’s own version of the Saviors — remains to be seen. But my money’s on a group of horrible humans.

Sony explained that this was super-early footage of the game, which it hopes to release in the next couple of years.
