Star Wars Director: C-3PO and R2-D2 Have a "Sexual Relationship"

Disney/Lucasfilm

The hottest affair in the Star Wars galaxy wasn’t Han Solo and Princess Leia, but instead, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Fans have long suspected the two droids bickered like a couple, but now, there’s a least one person publicly involved with Star Wars who agrees that R2-D2 and C-3PO trade more than just insults. There might be an exchange of actual droid fluid between the pair.

Joking during a Twitter livestream to promote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gareth Edwards responded to a fan question about who his favorite Star Wars couple was. “If it’s a sexual relationship, then R2-D2 and C-3PO” Edwards said, and added “[R2-D2] has that little thing that comes out.”

Alan Tudyk — the voice of Rogue One’s new droid K-2SO — also mentioned during the live stream that he thought his character would get along with R2-D2 but not C-3PO. “R2 is cool,” Tudyk said, “He’s always cussing. That’s why they’re beeping him out.”

The idea of a tongue-in-robot-cheek relationship between R2-D2 and C-3PO isn’t exactly new. Fans have long made jokes about it practically since 1977. In terms of the logistics of a sexual relationship though, it’s not quite been established in Star Wars if droids can (or want to) get it on.

Back in 1977, one of the Topps trading cards for Star Wars issued an image with an “error” in which C-3PO looks to be rocking a fully erect robot cock. This was later chalked up to a simple camera angle problem with the image, though rumors circulated for years that the golden droid penis was added by a disgruntled employee. According to a 2012 news story by Cyriaque Lamar on io9, “the extra appendage is not the work of an artist, but rather a trick of timing and light.”

But now that Gareth Edwards has made history by being the first Star Wars director to make R2-D2 and C-3PO’s relationship explicit, everyone can start taking their secret fan fiction stories a little more seriously.
