The bond between superhero and villain is thicker than blood, and Suicide Squad director David Ayer says what links Batman and the Joker is positively dental.

That’s right - Batman is the one who gave the Joker his grill.

“Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum,” Ayer explained to Empire in a recent interview. “It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Nothing like a little facial tattoo backstory to spice up a weekday morning. Ayer has been dropping knowledge about Suicide Squad throughout the film’s press tour - he’s spoken on how he feels the film fits into DC canon, and put a popular (if deeply flawed) fan theory to bed.

“Ridiculous,” Ayer said to WSVN-TV’s Chris Van Vliet, responding to the conspiracy theory that Jared Leto’s Joker is actually Jason Todd, another Batman baddie. “That ain’t gonna happen.”

Whatever man, Jaws has been doing this look since 'Moonraker.'

Ayer also addressed the obvious nod to Brony fandom via Boomerang’s little pal Pinky, a tiny stuffed unicorn.

“It became a bit of a mascot,” Ayer admitted to Empire. “Yes, [he’s a] Brony. Which is fine. I think it’s a good thing and gives him a little hobby besides robbing banks.”

Say what you will about the film, but Ayer is doing his due diligence in fleshing out his little corner of the world, grills, ponies and all.
