Guillermo del Toro announced today that his upcoming animated series Trollhunters will star Anton Yelchin, Kelsey Grammer, and Ron Perlman.
The series is based off a YA book by del Toro and Daniel Kraus, and is produced by DreamWorks Animation. It promises to “unleash a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown.”
Yelchin will voice Tim, the teen protagonist who is presumably the sword-wielding hero we see in this preview art. Grammer will voice Blinky, “a kind-hearted troll who befriends Jim”, while Perlman plays Bular, the bad-guy troll who battles against Tim and his friends.
It’s hard to tell much from the one image released so far, but the troll looks a touch more kid-friendly than the book’s art. We can safely expect great storytelling from del Toro and charming animation from DreamWorks.
Trollhunters was originally destined for a feature film several years ago, but was announced by Netflix in January. The DreamWorks-Netflix alliance is hoping to follow up the smash success of Voltron: Legendary Defender.
Trollhunters will be released on Netflix this December.
