Russell Nicolet: A Trial Lawyer Dedicated To Family And Midwest Values

Though he has faced challenges, Russell Nicolet has built a firm with the goal of changing lives for the better.

Russel Nicolet is a successful trial lawyer today, but the journey wasn’t easy. Nicolet came from a blue-collar family in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with no background in law. In high school, he was set to join the Army, but took the ACT at his mother’s request; his score got him into the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and made him the first of his family to attend a four-year institution.

Early Inspiration In Injury Law

In college, Nicolet met a volunteer attorney who offered legal help to students for $5 or $10. He hung posters for her, and she showed him how a law degree could help the community. Her example inspired him to pursue an education in law. While Nicolet dedicated himself to this path, he soon became disillusioned with big-firm life.

“I clerked for a solo trial attorney in Hudson, Wisconsin,” Nicolet shared. “Her clients knew her personally, and she had a stack of personal injury cases that I got to work on. Personal injury is the whole gamut of lawyering.”

Persistence And Dedication

Despite the difficulty, Nicolet realized that the breadth of personal injury law was what kept him going. Here were people who, by no fault of their own, were set back after working hard to get where they were. In this field, he could help them to their feet. After graduating from law school, it was with this inspiration that he founded Nicolet Law in 2007, with only a $500 laptop, a scanner, and a printer to his name.

Dedication saw Nicolet through the trials ahead. He learned website development and pay-per-click marketing himself and conducted legal research at the county law library because he couldn’t afford access to legal research software. He built a bankruptcy division ahead of 2020, only to lose it during the pandemic’s difficult restructuring period. For all these challenges, Nicolet persisted, due in part to the stories his clients told.

“I represented a man whose injuries meant he couldn’t do the hands-on work his business depended on,” Nicolet stated. “We recovered enough that he could hire employees and focus on the work he could still do. Seeing people like him get back on their feet is what I take pride in.”

Becoming A Leader In Injury Law

Nicolet’s first employee was his cousin. Over time, Nicolet’s brothers, sister, and his mom joined the business. Despite the setbacks he faced, his persistence and their continued support have enabled him to grow Nicolet Law into a prominent firm across the Midwest.

“That tells me the culture we’ve built is working,” Nicolet said. “Taking care of each other, our clients, and our communities.”

Ambition For The Future

Looking to the years ahead, Nicolet hopes to proceed with deliberate growth. He wants to serve all those he can across the Midwest, all while ensuring that the people who’ve built their careers with his firm know there’s a stable plan for their families. As for his legacy, Nicolet doesn’t want to be envisioned as someone special. He’s a normal Midwesterner who cares for his clients and treats them fairly.
